Portuguese Immersion Nursery Program
Part-time or Full-Time
Our Nursery Program was launched in 2015 for infants and toddlers between ages 1 to 2. The program was created in response to the needs of current parents and families in the community who wanted to provide their young children early exposure to the Portuguese language in a social and nurturing environment.
The curriculum, inspired by the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, blends the Portuguese language with a variety of activities such as arts, music, storytelling, cooking, sensorial explorations, and much more! A child's day at GIRAFAS includes a comfortable balance of indoor and outdoor (at Fort Greene Park) activities, including free exploration and guided learning.
In the mixed-age group, children ages 1-2 work together in the same classroom. During work cycle, the strategic display of materials in the environment invite scholars to work independently and discover their potential.
The small group size of up to 12 students has two teachers and a floater assistant (teacher ratio of 4:1 - with more infants in the group or 6:1 with more children 2+). The small setting allows educators to provide personalized attention, establishing an ideal emotional and social base, while working around each child’s needs and interests.
